La Feria de las Flores

Núria Güell

The Flower Fair has consisted of organizing and conducting a series of guided tours through the works of Fernando Botero, “the paisa artist par excellence”, exhibited in the permanent collection of the Museum of Antioquia in the city of Medellín. The particularity of these visits is that they are carried out by minors (between 12 and 17 years old) who have been exploited by the growing business of sex tourism in Medellín. The minors guide visitors through works in which the artist represented the female body. To do this, these atypical modern art guides rely on their personal experiences around the sexual exploitation of children and show the objectification of the female body, showing the virginity sales catalogs that circulate through the streets of the city and through which tourists – mostly from the US, Spain, Israel, Germany and Mexico – select the girl or boy whose virginity they want to buy. “Milagro Medellín” is how the new model of the city that they define as progressive, cosmopolitan, innovative and cultural is known. In this, as in most urban redevelopments on an international scale, culture has been a key element for the “revitalization” of the center of Medellín. For this, Fernando Botero contributed with the donation of 137 works and one million dollars for the Museum of Antioquia, and 23 monumental sculptures for the construction of the square that would bear his name, in front of the Museum. This allowed promoting Medellín as the Botero City and placing it in the international ranking of cultural tourist destinations. Despite several achievements at the social level, under this lucrative facelift one of its worst consequences is invisible: the sexual exploitation of children within the growing sex tourism industry. The project invites a critical review of the dominant patriarchal and sexist gaze in Art History.
